Dr Daniel Chiang

Specialist Anaesthetist and Senior Lecturer, Department of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Northshore Hospital & University of Auckland, NZ
Dr Daniel Chiang MBBS (Hons), PhD, FANZCA. Daniel is a Specialist Anaesthetist with a clinical appointment at North Shore Hospital and an academic appointment as a senior lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology and Anaesthesiology at the University of Auckland. Daniel completed his PhD in the genetics and epigenetic of pain after breast cancer surgery, a project that was awarded the Best free paper award at the ANZCA ASM 2018 and the Russell Cole Memorial ANZCA research award for the highest ranking pain related research project in the 2018 ANZCA research foundation project grant round. His current research focuses on the pharmacogenetics, epigenetics, and clinical pharmacology associated with the development and management of postsurgical pain and perioperative outcomes.

Persistent Pain after Breast Cancer Surgery in New Zealand

Persistent pain after breast cancer surgery is a condition which affects up to 60% of patients who undergo breast cancer surgery. This pain may last for months after surgery and has been associated with greater disability, psychological distress and interference with activities of daily living. This talk will present data on the prevalence, impact and risk factors of this condition in New Zealand and discuss possible preventative strategies.
